Hello All!
As
promised, (see link below) I am going to be discussing the Major Arcana
Deck from a very philosophical viewpoint. This is bearing in mind that
to me the Major Arcana is 'The Journey Of Life'. In every card a persons
life can so easily be tracked. Aleister Crowley always remarked that
you could tell a persons 'whole life' in one card. I too believe this.
Here is the link to my introductory post to this series which I hope you will come back and follow as I talk about each card.
TAROT - THE JOURNEY OF LIFE
We have already discussed THE FOOL and how I personally feel it fits into the Journey of Life. My findings and all the cards I will be discussing is on the link above.
We come now to THE MAGICIAN. The Number 1 card of the Major Arcana. When you think of Number one what enters your mind? is it 'being first'? is it a number of importance? is it a card that makes you feel as though you have achieved?
As we have discussed, THE FOOL card can represent the beginning or the end of the Life Journey as I would see it. Does that mean that really the Magician is the FIRST card of the Major Arcana? If we are to place it in the Journey of Life in the way I am looking at it, we have to see that Magician is actually 'doing things'. We started with The Fool as a baby, a novice and you may need to read what I have suggested there, then we have THE MAGICIAN, number one. One who has taken the FIRST STEP. He has passed the Novice Stage. He could be thought of as the curiousTodler or situation that shows to you that 'everything is possible'. The tools are all there before him on the Table. He sees the vegetation and the sea/cliffs. He sees all the objects at his disposal, he sees the whole world on the table . Things to do, things that help him on his way. He understands that there is a sky and an earth. As above, so below. He sees all around him. He stands for SCIENCE.
We are born with some tools of the Trade. We have a human form. A body shape. We are no longer naked. We are no longer completely innocent as we have things to try out. We can see /try to play with those tools on the table. We can set goals for ourselves, we can 'do things' so we know we are going in the right direction on the Journey of Life. Even with those tools at our disposal though, we cant guarantee that all our ideas will work. We dont know exactly if we are a child our own strength, how far we can walk, what we can reach, we just know that we can try it and it is our goal or it is possible.
The Magician is also known as the demigogue trickster card. How would that play a part? you need to think about this. We have everything on the table but maybe some things are not what they seem. Yes everything appears possible with the 'tools' that we have, but do we know they will work? or will we use those tools to trick others? is this our personality forming? is this a part of our personality in this card? does this show that a fresh new being can be taught right and wrong? that it is shown things and it must learn to use those things in the right way? will someone tell us how to use the things in the right way or will they tell us how to use them because they want to shape up our understanding and use instructions that are not quite true but allow us to avoid problems. OR..even the other way around?
All those tools. So much we can do. Its a very positive card. When we are young, we know very little fear. We can use our tools for good and for bad. We are learning. We are looking 'scientifically' at everything. Does this bit go with that? if I do this what happens? if I do that will it work? This card shows you that you have the ability to find the right tools, to use the right tools and that things are now possible to do. As a baby you can do little, as you begin to grow and stand on your feet you explore shapes, sounds, curiosity is abound in every way.
We if you recall are talking about the JOURNEY of Life and how our lifes journey can be seen in the Major Arcana. We are not discussing all the minute details of how this card would affect a question/situation or at other times when it appears in a spread. Of course it has many meanings in that respect and will affect your reading in different ways . But as it stands in the journey I want to take you on, it is NUMBER 1. It is the beginning of being able TO DO where all things are POSSIBLE. Where we try out things for good or for bad. Where we are learning how to use our tools now that we are aware of much around us. It is really an exciting and fun card which empowers the fresh human being and gives them so much to think about.
Number 1, is that real step of living. Touch, Smell, Hearing, Taste, Sight being primary functions. We learn to balance and we have a certain sense of awareness around us.
In this card we are 'FINDING OUT'. We are testing things, doing things, figuring things out. We are also showing that we can do that too. We please those watching us showing what we can do. We might even cheat a little but we give an IMPRESSION that we are able in some way to show to others something. EVERYTHING is possible to us. Its exciting and allows us to explore and use our senses. This is how I see the Magician on the Journey of Life. The Leminiscate (the symbol above The Magician's head like an 8 on its side) is the sign of INFINITY. We are infinite, empowered and we can do anything. Do you remember as a child where you felt completely that you could fly if you wanted to? you would quickly find out that you cannot, BUT it is how you feel. Life is full of interesting things! nothing can stop you now!
There are many meanings to this card to be used in other ways and I will come back to include some of those. For now I leave these thoughts when looking at the Life Journey and will add other thoughts as we go along.
Please join me next for THE HIGH PRIESTESS.
