SMITHFIELD — On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Fulton County Sheriff's Department was contacted in the late evening hours by the San Diego Harbor Police Department in California, advising them that missing Smithfield man Derick Higgins was being detained by them as a missing/endangered person.
According to the Fulton County Sheriff's report, an officer had made contact and Higgins had identified himself as Derick Higgins.
Higgins has been missing since March 2013. He had been arrested twice for vagrancy by the police in Las Vegas, Nev., in 2014, but was using a different name, Adam Wilson. He was identified using fingerprints. That was the last time Higgins was identified until Saturday.
Family last saw Higgins, then 21, at about 7 a.m. March 21, 2013, when he left his rural Smithfield residence in a 1998 Buick LeSabre. The abandoned vehicle was found a few days later outside Tallahassee, Fla., after it had been involved in a minor accident
